then, do the works of the Hermitage Group hold up? Is this solid work in its own
right, press kits and dramatic rhetoric aside? There is no question whatever that
the Hermitage artists are serious, impassioned artists who worked tirelessly with
little support through difficult times. . . However, if you look at the images
they created during the 20 years they spent in the bowels of the Hermitage
Museum studying each inch of a Rembrandt surface, we're not surprised to find
little that is controversial, avant-garde or artistically underground as we usually
